Is SuperAnnotate (SME) legit?

Researched October 2026 · 21 sources

Yes. SME Careers is SuperAnnotate's own hiring site for expert AI trainers, run by SME Solutions, Inc. in San Francisco, and contractors report being paid through Deel. Getting work after you are approved is much less certain. Approval is not work: on 11 October 2026 half of its 264 open roles said they had no immediate project, and many onboarded contractors report waiting months. Offers can also come in far below the 'up to' rate on the listing. It pays $17–$115+/hr by domain and geography (third-party reports).

Who is behind it

SME Careers is run by SME Solutions, Inc., listed at SuperAnnotate's address (100 Bush Street, San Francisco); its job posts call it a SuperAnnotate subsidiary. SuperAnnotate, founded in 2018 by Vahan Petrosyan and his brother Tigran, sells AI data software and services and raised a $50 million Series B from Socium Ventures, NVIDIA, Databricks Ventures and Dell Technologies Capital. The sme.careers domain dates from August 2025; SME names no client labs.

Getting paid

SME pays weekly through Deel: approved work done Monday to Sunday is paid the following Friday. On 11 October 2026 its public job feed held 2,229 postings for 264 roles in 105 countries, nearly all hourly in US dollars, with top rates from $2.50 to $150 an hour. Most postings give only a maximum, and SME's team sets your actual rate.

Fake SuperAnnotate (SME) recruiters

We found no confirmed reports of fake recruiters using SME Careers' name, and it publishes no scam warning. Its real sites are sme.careers and docs.sme.careers; support uses support@sme.careers, and contracts and ID checks happen only in Deel. Referrers message people on LinkedIn, so check that links lead to sme.careers. Its pages mention no joining fee: never pay for work.

What people praise

  • Contractors on Reddit confirm real pay: one working on a project says you are paid hourly and the pay is decent, and another says they have been paid to date.
  • A RemoWork reviewer shows eight completed Deel payouts from SME Solutions, Inc. totalling $2,362.05, on a project that paid $15 an hour (the site also lists SME jobs on its own board).
  • Its public help pages set out the rules before you apply: the pay week, which tracked time is paid, the retake limit, and that finishing onboarding does not guarantee a project.

What people complain about

  • Many people pass, sign the Deel contract and then get no project: Reddit users describe waiting 2 months and, in one case, a year and a half, and one says a pay dispute went unanswered.
  • Offers can be far below the listing: Reddit users report roles advertised at $55 and $30 an hour that came with offers of $9 and $8, and contracts that say only 'Data Trainer'.
  • Trustpilot is split: most of SuperAnnotate's 34 reviews are five-star, many about its software, but one-star reviewers (2024 to August 2026) say they were not paid in full or never heard back, and it has not replied.
  • Hourly projects need the Insightful desktop tracker, which can record screenshots, screen recordings, apps and websites while the timer runs; time idle for over 2 minutes is unpaid.
Who it suits

Best for: Credentialed professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, linguists) with three or more years in their field who want hourly AI project work paid weekly through Deel as extra income. Not for: Anyone who needs steady hours or a fast start, expects the listed 'up to' rate, lives where Deel or the role is unavailable, or will not accept a recorded AI video interview and screen tracking.

Honest catches

  • Pay here is third-party reports, not measured live from a job feed, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a guaranteed rate.

How to get started on SuperAnnotate (SME)

Researched October 2026

Create an account at sme.careers (email or LinkedIn), fill in the two-step data trainer form with a PDF CV, apply to a role, take a recorded AI video interview of about 15 minutes, pass any exam and SME's screening, then sign a Deel contract, pass Deel's ID check and link Discord; then you wait for a project invitation, do a paid bootcamp and get paid weekly through Deel.

Who can join

  • A country that Deel supports. The application form greys out countries Deel does not support, and you cannot select them. SME publishes no list of supported countries.
  • A country the role is open in. On 11 October 2026 the public job feed held postings in 105 countries, but 108 of the 264 roles were open in one country only, and the only African countries listed were South Africa, Egypt and Mauritius.
  • Real credentials for the role. On that date 227 of the 264 roles named a degree, more than 200 asked for 3 or more years of experience, and 120 asked for English at C1. The Medical Doctor (Specialist) role asks for completed specialty training and 5+ years of clinical practice.
  • A desktop computer with a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, a working microphone and camera, a stable connection and a quiet place for the AI interview. SME does not recommend mobile devices.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID and a selfie for Deel's identity check, with the name on the ID exactly matching your account. You also need a Discord account: SME requires a verified one before you can be assigned work.
  • For projects paid by the hour, a computer on which you can install the Insightful desktop time tracker. On macOS you must also give it screen-recording permission.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Create your account

Go to sme.careers/apply and sign up with an email and password (8+ characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a special character), or continue with LinkedIn. A 6-digit code is emailed to verify your address. You can request a new code once every 2 minutes.

  2. 2

Fill in the data trainer application

The form has two steps: Personal information and Resume. You give your country, education, native language, skills and an expected hourly rate in US dollars (or tick Prefer not to say). Your CV must be a PDF of 5 MB or less. SME reads it to fill in your profile, so check the result.

  3. 3

Apply to one or more roles

Open roles are listed at sme.careers/jobs, and you can browse them without an account. You can apply to many roles, but only once to each. After you apply, the role shows on your Applications page as Interview pending, with a Take Interview button.

  4. 4

    Take the AI interview

The AI interview is a recorded video conversation scheduled for about 15 minutes. You accept a consent notice, pass a microphone and camera check, then answer a warm-up question and role-specific ones. Most interviews are in English. Using Google, ChatGPT or notes leads to disqualification.

  5. 5

    Wait for the result

Grading usually takes 1 to 2 business days. Your application then shows Qualified for role if you passed, Retake available if you may try again, or Not Passed. Automated tools write a summary and a first assessment, and human reviewers take part in the evaluation.

  6. 6

Pass the exam, if any, and screening

Some roles add a qualification exam after the interview, taken outside the SME Careers site. SME's team then reviews your profile and CV. Some roles add a short recruiter interview, by email invitation. A missed appointment without notice can end the process.

  7. 7

Sign the Deel contract and verify your ID

When you are invited to onboard, open Profile, then Onboarding, and select Request contract. Deel emails your contract within a few minutes of the request. You sign an independent contractor agreement, then upload a government photo ID and take a selfie in Deel.

  8. 8

    Link your Discord account

Select Verify Discord in the same Onboarding tab and authorise SME Careers. All three onboarding steps (contract, ID check and Discord) must be finished before you can be assigned any work. Finishing onboarding does not guarantee a project.

  9. 9

Accept an invitation and pass the bootcamp

A project invitation shows the hourly rate that project pays you and when it expires. Most projects start with a paid bootcamp, where the team scores your training tasks. Not passing the bootcamp removes you from that project only.

  10. 10

Do the work and get paid weekly

You do the tasks in the project's work platform (for example SuperAnnotate), not on the SME Careers site. Work done Monday to Sunday is paid the following Friday through Deel, once the team has approved it.

SME Careers AI interview, plus a qualification exam and recruiter interview on some roles

Most roles use an AI interview as the first assessment step. An AI interviewer asks about your background and expertise; automated tools then produce a summary and a first assessment, and SME says people make the final decisions. Some roles add a qualification exam or a short recruiter interview, and a paid bootcamp tests you again once you join a project.

Format

A recorded video conversation scheduled for about 15 minutes, on a desktop browser with microphone and camera. You take the interview once, and a single retake is possible only if SME offers one. An interview with fewer than three questions answered does not count as an attempt. On 11 October 2026, 96 of the 264 open roles listed an AI interview, a domain-specific task and a recruiter interview.

How to prepare

  • Read the welcome page before you start: it shows the role, the pay rate where one is set, the role description and the language you must answer in.
  • Use a desktop computer and headphones in a quiet place, allow microphone and camera access, and close apps such as Zoom or Slack that may be holding them.
  • Answer with concrete examples from your own work: SME says they carry more weight than general statements, and that you should say so when you do not know something.
  • Take your time. The AI pauses 5 to 6 seconds after you finish speaking so that it does not cut you off, and a timer on screen shows the scheduled time.
  • Before a retake, reread the job description and requirements, and wait for your current result first so that you do not create duplicate records.

Why people get rejected

  • Using Google, ChatGPT, notes or any outside source during the interview: SME says this is detectable and results in disqualification.
  • Not meeting the bar on the first interview and again on the retake: after that the role shows 'You've used all your interview attempts for this role.'
  • Not getting through the team's profile and CV review, or missing a recruiter appointment without notice, after you have already qualified.
  • The role being paused or closed after you apply: the application shows 'This job is no longer available' and you can take no further action on it.
  • Not a rejection: on 11 October 2026, 132 of the 264 open roles said there was no immediate project, so qualifying there only puts you in the pool.
How long it takes

SME gives no end-to-end timeline. Grading usually takes 1 to 2 business days. Screening has no fixed timeline: it depends on the role, current demand and how quickly each side completes its steps. The ID check usually takes minutes, but a manual review can take up to 3 business days. After onboarding, project invitations depend on client demand, again with no fixed timeline.

When you get paid

Approved earnings are bundled into one payout per week. Work done Monday to Sunday is paid the following Friday through Deel. The money typically arrives 1 to 3 days after SME submits the payout to Deel. The exact time depends on your withdrawal method. On hourly projects only tracked active time is paid. SME's team sets your hourly rate; you cannot set or edit it.

Tips to get accepted

  • Treat 'Up to $X/hr' as a ceiling. On 11 October 2026, 1,988 of the 2,229 postings gave no minimum rate, and SME says its team sets your rate from your experience, skills, location and market rates.
  • Check the description for 'There is no immediate project for this role' before you spend time on it. On 11 October 2026 that line was on 132 of the 264 open roles, including Attorney and Lawyer.
  • Expect competition. Each card on the jobs page shows how many people applied this month: on 11 October 2026 the English Language Expert card showed 8,623 and the Biomedical Engineer card 1,413.
  • Read the invitation card before you accept: it shows the hourly rate for that project and a deadline. Withdrawing carries no penalty, and an expired invitation can no longer be accepted.
  • Choose your Deel withdrawal method with fees in mind: Deel charges nothing for a local bank transfer, Wise or Revolut, 2.5% for PayPal and 1% (minimum $12) for Payoneer.
  • On hourly projects, switch the Insightful timer off for breaks. Time with no keyboard or mouse activity for more than 2 minutes is not paid, and neither is time on AI tools your project does not allow.

What isn't public

  • SME publishes no pass rate for the AI interview, no scoring method, and no figure for how many qualified or onboarded people get a project.
  • Listed pay is a ceiling. Most postings show only an 'up to' rate, and SME says its team sets your rate. Reddit users report offers far below the listing (roles advertised at $55 and $30 an hour with offers of $9 and $8). SME has not commented on these reports, and we could not verify them.
  • SME's marketing and its help pages disagree on speed. Its FAQ page says most experts find their first paid project within days of approval and its home page says 'Start Earning in weeks', while its help pages say there is no fixed timeline and that onboarding does not guarantee a placement.
  • Half the roles may have no work yet: 132 of the 264 roles open on 11 October 2026 said there was no immediate project. Reddit users report waiting two months, and in one case a year and a half, after signing the Deel contract.
  • We found no public contractor terms. The site's footer links only a privacy policy and a cookie policy, and the contractor agreement is shown in Deel once you request it. The help pages do not cover taxes, notice periods or minimum hours.
  • SME says your country must be supported by Deel but publishes no country list. Its home page speaks of experts from 40+ countries, while its job feed held postings in 105 countries on 11 October 2026.
  • Applicants on Reddit say their Deel contract named the role only as 'Data Trainer' and showed no hourly rate. SME's help pages confirm that everyone is offered the role of Data Trainer at onboarding, and say the rate appears on your profile and on each project invitation.
  • Independent feedback is thin: the Trustpilot page for sme.careers has 1 review, Glassdoor blocked our reader, and Reddit accounts are anonymous and unverified. Job figures come from the public jobs API behind sme.careers/jobs and are a snapshot of 11 October 2026.

How long is the SME Careers AI interview?

It is scheduled for about 15 minutes, with a few minutes of grace at the end so you can finish your last answer. It is a recorded video conversation with an AI interviewer, taken online at a time that suits you, and most are in English.

Can I retake the SME Careers interview?

Only if your result comes back as Retake available, and then only once. An Incomplete interview (a technical problem, or fewer than three questions answered) does not count. SME says its team may grant a further attempt in rare cases, but this is not automatic.

How much does SME Careers pay?

It depends on the role and your country. On 11 October 2026 top rates on the 2,229 open postings ran from $2.50 an hour (Computer Vision QA Specialist, Bangladesh and India) to $150 (Medical Doctor, Specialist). Half topped out at $40 or less. The 222 US postings ran from $20 to $150, with a median of $55. These are maximums, not offers.

Weekly, through Deel. Work done Monday to Sunday is paid the following Friday, after the team approves it, and the money typically arrives 1 to 3 days later. You need an active Deel contract and a verified identity first. Paid exams are processed within about 10 days of your Deel contract being completed.

Is SME Careers the same company as SuperAnnotate?

It is part of it. Its job posts call SME Careers a subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, and its privacy policy names SME Solutions, Inc. and SuperAnnotate Inc. as controllers at the same San Francisco address. Project tasks are done in a work platform such as SuperAnnotate's own.

What if I am not selected? Can I reapply?

You can apply only once to each job, so you cannot reapply to the same one. Running out of attempts on one job does not affect other jobs: you can still apply and interview for other roles. If you qualified but were not matched, SME says your profile stays in its network for future roles.

Will I get work as soon as I finish onboarding?

Not necessarily. SME says completing onboarding makes you eligible for project matching but does not guarantee an immediate placement. On Reddit, some contractors say they were paid for project work, while others report two months, or even a year and a half, with no project.

Does SME Careers record my screen while I work?

On projects paid by the hour, yes, while the timer runs. The Insightful desktop app may record the applications you use, the websites you visit, screenshots and screen recordings. SME says nothing is recorded when the timer is off.

Is my interview recording used to train AI?

SME says no: your recording, image and voice are not used to train AI models and are not shared with clients. Recordings are kept for up to 24 months and deleted within 30 days on request, by email to support@sme.careers. Some applicants on Reddit and Trustpilot say they suspect otherwise.
