About Welo Data

Welo Data is the AI training data brand launched by Welocalize (a 25+ year language services company), fielding a curated community of 500,000+ annotators, linguists, and domain experts across 100+ countries and locales. Workers take projects spanning data labeling, model output ranking, RLHF, human evaluation, red-teaming, and multilingual assessment. Its public Welo Global job board lists specific projects with location requirements and, where disclosed, role-specific pay. The separate Welo Works platform handles contributor onboarding and project matching. Applying does not guarantee an assignment or a minimum volume of work.

Is Welo Data legit?

Researched October 2026 · 16 sources

Yes. Welo Data is the AI-data brand of Welocalize (founded 1997, now under Welo Global) and publishes how it pays, but expect unpaid one-shot tests and the risk of an unexplained account deactivation. Hours of unpaid, timed assessments with undisclosed pass marks, then possible permanent deactivation by its security screening with no reason given; Trustpilot reviewers describe both through October 2026. It pays $7–$40/hr typically (median $18/hr).

Who is behind it

Welocalize, a language-services company founded in 1997, launched Welo Data in May 2024 to supply AI training data, citing a community of 500,000+ experts. Since April 2026 both sit under a new New York parent, Welo Global (CEO Paul Carr), which says it serves 2,000+ clients. Welo Data is run by Siobhan Hanna, formerly of Lionbridge AI and Telus AI, and contributors invoice Welo Data, LLC in New York.

Getting paid

Freelancers get a purchase order for finished tasks (weekly by default, each Sunday), invoice it in Workday, and are paid 14 days after Welo Data receives the invoice, into Hyperwallet (wire in a few countries). US payees pay no Hyperwallet fees. US-based raters are part-time employees paid with a W-2.

Fake Welo Data recruiters

Welo Data says it emails only from @welocalize.com, @weloglobal.com, @welodata.ai or @hire.lever.co, lists every job on jobs.lever.co/weloglobal, never recruits by social-media message and never asks for fees or equipment purchases. Fake recruiters use Gmail-type addresses and private messages; report them to Welo Data.

What people praise

  • Contributors quoted on Welo Data's own site praise flexible hours and say it pays on time (Welo Data chose these quotes).
  • A reviewer who joined a Welo Data project in 2026 found onboarding organized and professional, and the mandatory training was paid.

What people complain about

  • Applicants describe hours of unpaid, timed tests whose pass marks are never disclosed, with no feedback on results.
  • Many say their accounts were permanently deactivated after sign-up or onboarding with no reason given, and support replied with templates.
  • Some say jobs they qualified for vanished, projects showed as full, or they earned nothing months after passing tests.
  • One reviewer says a completed project was never paid and support only resent payment instructions.

What has gone wrong

  • October 2026. From August to October 2026, Trustpilot reviewers described Welo Data account deactivations after registration or onboarding. One quoted the October notice: the registration failed Welo Data's verification and security checks, no details could be given, and the account was permanently deactivated. Welo Data says its NIMO system blocks sign-ups using fake or stolen identities.
Who it suits

Best for: Bilingual and multilingual people, linguists and domain specialists in many countries who want flexible, task-based AI work and can pass strict timed tests. Not for: Anyone who needs steady hours or fast pay, can only work from a phone or through a VPN, or wants to know why a test or account was rejected.

How to get started on Welo Data

Researched October 2026

Pick a role on Welo Data's job board, register in Welo Works (app.welodata.ai) with your email and a unique phone number, complete that role's steps (screening questions, NDA and CV, timed assessments, an Okta login, learning modules and a client exam), confirm the job, and finish ID, tax and payment details before paid work starts.

Who can join

  • A laptop or desktop computer: Welo Data does not allow work from a mobile phone.
  • The latest Chrome or Edge, a stable connection and time for each timed assessment in one uninterrupted sitting.
  • No VPN, proxy or similar tool while applying: they can interfere with eligibility screening and get an application declined automatically.
  • One account per person: your phone number must be unique, and the profile details you confirm at sign-up cannot be edited later.
  • The language, location and hours each role asks for. For example, a French (Canada) annotator posting asked for C2-level French-Canadian, advanced English and at least 15 to 20 hours a week.
  • For payment: a smartphone with a camera for ID verification, your tax ID number and a copy of your tax ID document.
  • In Spain, Italy and Greece you must be registered as a freelancer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Find a role

Browse Welo Data openings on its official board (jobs.lever.co/weloglobal) or in Welo Works, where each opportunity shows the pay rate, expected weekly hours and a description of the work.

  2. 2

    Register in Welo Works

At app.welodata.ai, enter your email, type in the one-time code it sends, fill in your profile and confirm it. Incorrect details can get your application rejected.

  3. 3

    Answer the screening questions

Answer truthfully about where you live, your equipment and your experience. If an answer rules you out, only that opportunity closes, and you can apply to others.

  4. 4

    Sign documents

Sign the NDA (and SLA) digitally and upload your CV. If you signed them for an earlier application, you do not sign again.

  5. 5

    Pass the assessments

Take the role's timed assessments in Welo Works. You must pass every assessment assigned to your application, and you generally cannot retake one for 6 months.

  6. 6

Create your Okta login and study

Set up the Okta account used for WeLearn, Workday and Welo Works, then complete the learning modules, which can take up to 24 hours to appear.

  7. 7

Pass the client exam and confirm

Take the client exam, then confirm the job and its requirements. The job appears in your Jobs tab and the project team contacts you.

  8. 8

    Set up payment

Verify your identity with a smartphone, verify your tax ID and submit your billing details and address. Validation takes from half an hour to two days.

Timed Welo Works assessments, then a client exam (per role)

Each role assigns one or more timed assessments, and you must pass all of them against a threshold the project sets and does not disclose; then come learning modules and a client exam. The same result can qualify you for one project and not another. Public assessments, open to anyone, let you pre-qualify for urgent projects.

Format

Online and timed, in one continuous session on a laptop or desktop (latest Chrome or Edge). The timer starts when you open the assessment, including while you read instructions, and it submits automatically when time runs out or a rule is broken. Automatically scored results update within about 30 minutes; ones a person reviews can take up to a week.

How to prepare

  • Use the study materials and learning modules first: Welo Data says the better you understand the learnings, the better your chance on the exam.
  • Connect everything before you start (mouse, target-language keyboard, headset) and turn off notifications, messaging apps and updates: closing a pop-up after starting still counts as breaking a rule.
  • Close every other tab and program, use one screen, and keep your phone away.
  • Make sure your connection is stable: the timer keeps running while you are offline and answers entered offline are not saved.
  • Take public assessments in your languages to pre-qualify, so the Talent team can contact you first when urgent projects open.
  • If a real technical fault hits, take a screenshot and file a ticket naming the assessment.

Why people get rejected

  • Breaking a rule (leaving or refreshing the window, keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl+F, a second screen or using your phone): the assessment submits at once, and this does not earn an early retake.
  • Running out of time: the assessment submits automatically and cannot be reopened.
  • Scoring below the project's minimum, shown as 'Declined'; thresholds and wrong answers are not shared.
  • A VPN or proxy during screening, which can decline an application automatically.
  • Registration that fails Welo Data's verification and security checks: Trustpilot reviewers in 2026 say this ended in permanent deactivation with no reason given.
  • Applying with several email addresses, which Welo Data says can hurt current or future applications.
How long it takes

After an automatically scored assessment your application status usually updates within 30 minutes; if a person reviews your answers it can take up to one week. Welo Data publishes no overall time from application to first paid task.

When you get paid

You invoice each purchase order in Workday, and Welo Data invoices are paid 14 days after Welo receives them (Welocalize's other entities pay after 45 or 60 days). Payments go out in batch runs that start on Wednesdays, into your Hyperwallet account, and the last settlement step usually takes 24 to 72 business hours. A few locations are paid only by wire transfer.

Tips to get accepted

  • Purchase orders are issued weekly by default (each Sunday); you can switch to daily or monthly in Workday, and only one purchase order can be invoiced at a time.
  • Withdraw from Hyperwallet regularly: funds left for six months are removed as abandoned. US payees pay no transfer fees; elsewhere fees depend on the method.
  • Before applying, disconnect VPNs, proxies and iCloud Private Relay, and do not apply from a library, university, internet cafe or workplace network.
  • Use one email address for every application: Welo Data says multiple addresses may hurt current or future applications.
  • Keep your Welo Works profile up to date and check the job board, which is updated daily: the team reaches out when upcoming projects match your skills.
  • Only trust email from @welocalize.com, @weloglobal.com, @welodata.ai or @hire.lever.co, and check that the job is on the official board; you get an official agreement before any work starts.

What isn't public

  • Welo Data does not disclose assessment pass thresholds, maximum scores or which answers were wrong, and gives no reason when its security checks deactivate an account.
  • No acceptance rate and no typical time from application to first paid task are published.
  • The help center does not say whether assessments, learning modules and client exams are paid; Trustpilot reviewers say the tests were unpaid, while one first-hand reviewer's project paid for mandatory training.
  • There is no rate card: pay is set per role and shown on each posting, and posted rates vary widely by country.
  • The help center is shared with the parent, Welocalize, and some articles describe Welocalize's older tools (Junction, Mettl) rather than Welo Works, so check which brand an article covers.
  • How US-based raters who are hired as part-time W-2 employees are paid (payroll rather than invoices) is not spelled out for Welo Data specifically.
