Key findings
- 2
A further 601 open roles (16.3%) are kept out only by a word such as "Expert" or "Specialist" in the title, 75.2% of them naming a language; counted in, generalist roles would be 44.7% of open roles.
- 3
Multilingual & Localization has the most generalist roles (538, 53.4% of its open roles), and Robotics & Physical-AI Data the highest share (87.7%).
- 4
Generalist roles advertise a median $45/hr against $65/hr for other roles; compared within the same kind of work, they advertise 85.9% more than other roles.
- 5
46.8% of the 3,261 roles with a full description mention no degree, years of experience or professional credential, rising to 84.0% among those with a generalist title.
- 6
218 descriptions say no prior AI experience is needed, yet 96.3% of them have a title asking for expertise or mention a degree, years of experience or a credential.
- 7
Only 88 of the 3,261 descriptions (2.7%) say outright that a beginner may apply (no experience or degree needed, entry level, or students and graduates welcome), and 60 of those 88 still have a title asking for a field or expertise.
- 8
Of the roles that state no requirement, 9.4% still mention an assessment or test and 66.6% a native or fluent language; where they state hours, the median is 20 a week.

Sample. 3,692 roles open at the end of 17 Oct 2026, read from their titles and kinds of work.
A generalist role: its kind of work is not Law, Medicine & Finance or Coding & Software Evaluation (professional by definition, so they have no generalist roles here), its title names no expert field and no level, expertise, profession or credential word. An explicit entry word in the title ("entry level", "no experience", "internship", "generalist") cancels the level, expertise and profession words.
It reads what a posting signals, not what it takes to be accepted: a generalist role can still be competitive, need a native language or a test, or state a requirement only in its description.
Median pay: the advertised hourly rate (the middle of a stated range) of the generalist roles that state one, shown with at least 8 such roles.

What marks a role as asking for expertise
What in an AI training role's title or kind of work signals that it wants experience?
| Signal | Share of open roles | Roles |
|---|---|---|
| The work is Law, Medicine & Finance or Coding & Software Evaluation | 1,416 | |
| The title names an expert field | 41.5% | 1,534 |
| The title has a level word (senior, staff, principal, lead, director, manager) | 6.3% | 233 |
| The title has an expertise word (expert, specialist, SME, professional, experienced) | 40.9% | 1,511 |
| The title has a profession (engineer, scientist, researcher, technician, inspector) | 10.6% | 393 |
| The title has a degree or credential (PhD, MD, JD, MBA, master's, certified, licensed, attorney, physician, nurse) | 4.4% | 163 |
| None of these: a generalist role | 28.4% | 1,048 |
Sample. 3,692 roles open at the end of 17 Oct 2026, read from their titles and kinds of work.
A role can carry several signals and counts for each; the last column counts the roles a signal alone keeps out, so it shows how much each word decides.
Some platforms put 'Specialist' or 'Expert' in every title, including language roles that ask mainly for fluency; those count as asking for expertise, so the generalist count is a cautious one.

Figure 4
What generalist roles pay, against other roles of the same kind
How much less do roles that ask for no expertise pay than other roles in the same kind of work?

Sample. Roles open at the end of 17 Oct 2026 that state an hourly rate; kinds of work with at least 5 priced roles on both sides.
First row: the gap is the within-kind comparison (each kind's median generalist rate over its median for other roles, minus one, averaged across kinds weighted by the generalist roles), as in the pay premiums report; its two medians are across all kinds, for context.
Rows with fewer than 8 priced roles on either side are marked.
Advertised pay is what a posting states, not what a worker earns after task rates, tiers or unpaid qualification time.

Figure 5
What the descriptions ask for
How many AI training roles mention no degree, no years of experience and no credential?
| The description | Share of roles read | Roles | Generalist titles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mentions a degree (bachelor's or higher) | 37.7% | 1,231 | 8.3% |
| Mentions a PhD or master's | 25.5% | 831 | 2.4% |
| Asks for current enrolment (and no degree) | 0.1% | 2 | 0.0% |
| States years of experience | 25.8% | 842 | 12.6% |
| States 5 years or more | 7.5% | 243 | 8.5% |
| Mentions a professional credential | 10.5% | 343 | 0.0% |
| None of these: no stated requirement | 46.8% | 1,526 | 84.0% |
Sample. 3,261 roles open on 17 Oct 2026 whose job board publishes a full description (AfterQuery, Anyone AI, Appen, Babel Audio, Braintrust, Claru, Handshake AI, Invisible, Mercor, micro1, Mindrift, OneForma, OpenTrain AI, Outlier (Scale AI), Pasiflora AI, Perle Labs, Pila8, RemoExperts, Remotasks, Sigma AI, Sovrano AI, SuperAnnotate (SME), Terac, TransPerfect DataForce, Turing, Vetto, Welo Data and xAI (SpaceXAI)), 88.3% of all open roles; 956 of them have a generalist title.
Read with the requirements report's published patterns. A mention can be a requirement or a preference ('a degree is a plus'); both count, so 'no stated requirement' is a cautious count.
A description that offers a degree as one alternative ('a high school diploma, or a bachelor's') counts as mentioning a degree.
The platforms that publish full descriptions are expert networks, so these roles lean towards expert work and are not a sample of every platform.

Figure 6
What descriptions say outright about beginners
How many AI training roles say plainly that no experience or degree is needed?
| Statement | Roles | Share of roles read | Still mention a degree, years or credential |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any statement that a beginner may apply | 88 | 2.7% | 35.2% |
| No experience needed | 11 | 0.3% | 0.0% |
| No degree required | 2 | 0.1% | 0.0% |
| No formal or technical background required | 1 | 0.0% | 0.0% |
| Entry level, or a low barrier to entry | 74 | 2.3% | 39.2% |
| Students, graduates or beginners welcome | 0 | 0.0% | n/a |
| Asks for a high school diploma or equivalent | 2 | 0.1% | 100.0% |
| No prior AI or annotation experience needed | 218 | 6.7% | 51.4% |
Sample. 3,261 roles open on 17 Oct 2026 whose job board publishes a full description (AfterQuery, Anyone AI, Appen, Babel Audio, Braintrust, Claru, Handshake AI, Invisible, Mercor, micro1, Mindrift, OneForma, OpenTrain AI, Outlier (Scale AI), Pasiflora AI, Perle Labs, Pila8, RemoExperts, Remotasks, Sigma AI, Sovrano AI, SuperAnnotate (SME), Terac, TransPerfect DataForce, Turing, Vetto, Welo Data and xAI (SpaceXAI)), 88.3% of all open roles.
Each statement is a published pattern over the description (ENTRY_PATTERNS in the method). The first row counts any of them except the AI-experience line.
'No prior AI experience needed' says the AI-training part will be taught; most of the roles that say it ask for a field of expertise in the same description, so it is not counted as open to beginners.

For labs, data vendors and researchers
Buy the data behind this report
The figures above are a summary. Behind them are records we collect ourselves, every day:
10,301 roles tracked, each with its history
Every role on 29 job boards, read daily since 13 Jul 2026: its pay and place, and the first and last day it was open.
6,200 apply clicks in 28 days
Which roles people actually apply to, by field, pay and kind of work. It happens on this site, so nobody else can count it.
39 lab and vendor hiring boards
The job boards of 25 AI labs and 14 human-data vendors, read every day: who is hiring for human data, and who is hiring to buy it.

Method and definitions
The public job boards of the AI training platforms this site tracks, read every day. Descriptions come from the platforms whose boards publish them in full. Every figure is computed by one database query over the window shown, the same query for the live report and for every edition. Each figure states its sample beneath it.
- Generalist role
- An open role whose kind of work is not law, medicine and finance or coding (professional by definition), whose title names no expert field, and whose title has no level word (senior, staff, principal, lead, director, manager), expertise word (expert, specialist, SME, professional, experienced, advanced), profession (engineer, scientist, researcher, technician, inspector and similar) or degree or credential (PhD, MD, JD, MBA, master's, certified, licensed, attorney, physician, nurse). An explicit entry word in the title (entry level, no experience, junior, internship, trainee, generalist) cancels the level, expertise and profession words, not a field or a credential.
- Expert field
- Named in the title, matched as whole words against the vocabulary of the expert-fields report.
- No stated requirement
- A full description that mentions no degree and no current enrolment, no number of years of experience and no professional credential, read with the patterns published in the requirements report. A mention can be a preference ('a degree is a plus'); it still counts as stating one.
- Entry statement
- A description that says no experience, degree or formal background is needed, that the role is entry level or has a low barrier to entry, that students, graduates or beginners are welcome, or that a high school diploma is the education asked for. Each is a published pattern.
- No prior AI experience
- A description saying no prior AI, annotation or model-evaluation experience is needed. Counted on its own line and never as an entry statement: it says the AI-training part will be taught, usually beside a request for expertise in a field.
- Within-kind pay gap
- For each kind of work with at least 5 priced roles on both sides, the median advertised rate of generalist roles over the median of other roles, minus one; averaged across kinds, weighted by the generalist roles, as in the pay premiums report.
- Advertised pay
- The hourly figure a posting states (the middle of a stated range). Medians need at least 8 roles stating a rate.
- Open role
- A role listed by a given day and still in its platform's feed that day.
- Kind of work
- Each role is classified from its title and description into one of the twelve kinds of AI training work this site tracks. Every kind links to its own page.
What this data cannot tell you
- Platforms that recruit without a public job board are not counted. Several large ones invite workers to projects directly.
- A generalist role is a reading of what a title signals, not a promise of acceptance: it can still be competitive, need a native language or a test, be open in a few countries only, or state a professional requirement only in its description (a building-code reviewer, for example).
- Some platforms write 'Expert' or 'Specialist' into every title, including language roles that ask mainly for fluency; those count as asking for expertise, so the generalist share is a cautious one, and the report states how many roles that word alone keeps out.
- Full descriptions come from a few expert networks only, so the description figures lean towards expert work and describe those platforms.
- A pattern can miss a requirement phrased in an unusual way, and a mention is not always a requirement; nothing is inferred beyond what the text says.
- Pay is what postings advertise, not what workers earn after task rates, tiers or unpaid qualification time.
How the job feeds are read and roles are classified: site methodology. How fresh, complete and consistent the data is, checked every day: data quality and coverage.
Editions
The live report covers the last 28 complete days and changes every day. Each complete month is also published as an edition, frozen two days after the month ends, so a figure you cite from an edition never moves.
